Samuel Girard was born on May 12, 1998 in Roberval, Quebec. A product of the Shawinigan Catatactes of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, he won the Emile Bourchard Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 2015-16.
Girard was taken in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators and made his professional debut for the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, during the late stages of the 2016-17 season. He would crack the Predators lineup to start the 2017-18 season, but after suiting up in just five games was dealt as part of a three-team trade to the Colorado Avalanche. Girard would go on to appear in 68 games for the Avalanche during his rookie season, scoring three times and adding 17 assists for 20 points. Girard suited up in all 82 games during the 2018-19 season, finding the back of the net four times and recording 23 assists.
